Hostess Donettes, Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Pies, Fruit Roll-Ups, and more contain hidden contaminants that turn into probable human carcinogens — and they're in almost every refined oil product on store shelves. Here's what Big Food doesn't want you to know.

Glycidyl esters (GEs) and 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol esters (3-MCPDE) are contaminants that can occur in edible oils. They are formed during the high-temperature deodorization step in the refining of edible vegetable and seed oils (such as palm, corn, and canola oils). They can also form during high-temperature cooking. Because they are byproducts, they do not appear on the packaging label.
During digestion, GE and 3-MCPDE break down to the organic chemicals 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) and glycidol. In studies of rodents, 3-MCPD caused adverse effects on kidneys and male reproductive organs, and both 3-MCPD and glycidol caused cancer. Glycidol contains a highly reactive epoxide group, making it toxic to DNA. The International Agency for Research on Cancer categorizes glycidol as a Group 2A carcinogen (“probably carcinogenic to humans”). The US Department of Health and Human Services’ Report on Carcinogens has classified glycidol as a probable human carcinogen. Among foods identified in a recent study with residues of glycidol are the following:
GEs and 3-MCPD are found in almost all refined oils and foods made with them. Processed foods containing these oils include margarine and vegetable oil spreads, cookies, pastries, cakes, and other baked foods, as well as fried potato products and some baby foods.
Because of their genotoxic nature (meaning they can directly damage DNA), health agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority closely monitor GE levels and work with the food industry to mitigate their formation by modifying deodorization temperatures and actively washing or bleaching crude oils to remove the chemical precursors before extreme heat is applied.

To minimize exposure, replace highly refined vegetable oils with extra-virgin or cold-pressed oils; limit consumption of mass-market fried and processed foods; choose moist-heat cooking methods over prolonged dry frying.

Olive is a holistic health companion built to help you live cleaner and feel better. Scan a barcode and Olive shows you exactly what is in your food, your personal care products, and the things you bring into your home, then points you to a clean swap that actually makes a difference.
Inside the app you also get:
You scan a product. Olive scores it from 0 to 100 (higher is cleaner), explains in plain language why it scored that way, flags the harmful stuff like seed oils, additives, hidden sugars, contaminants, and endocrine disruptors, and points you to a cleaner swap.
From there, Olive helps you actually change: a 28-day kitchen detox to start, habit building, coaching, and doctor-supervised peptide protocols.
What starts with one scan can end in more energy, a clear head, and a shopping cart you finally trust.
All three. Scan food and drinks for the 0 to 100 score, with a breakdown of toxins, additives, processing, seed oils, and sugar.
Scan skincare, makeup, sunscreen, shampoo, and other personal care products and Olive rates every ingredient green, yellow, or red with a plain-language reason for the rating.
Scan bottled water and Olive checks it for contaminants such as fluoride, heavy metals, and microplastics.
We do our own independent lab testing for heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic) across roughly 400 products so far. That is more testing than most companies do, including Consumer Reports.
Our cosmetic ingredient rating system was built with the head of a chemical toxin working group, so every ingredient carries a documented reason behind its rating.
And Olive is independent. No ads, no affiliates, and we do not take money to change scores. Your subscription is what funds the testing, so Olive answers to you. All of it runs on a database of 10M+ products.
