A groundbreaking study published in Nature reveals that two simple lifestyle changes can reduce harmful plastic chemicals in your body by up to 60% in just one week. Here's what researchers discovered about detoxing from everyday plastic exposure.

The everyday use of plastic products exposes us to plastic-associated chemicals (PACs); among these are the bisphenols and phthalates, which cause cancer and reproductive harm.
The Plastic Exposure Reduction Transforms Health Trial shows that seven days of emphasizing two healthy-living swaps can significantly lower your plastic exposure.
The research was conducted in Australia. Two groups were studied over seven days. One lived their everyday lives without attempting to reduce plastic exposure. But the intervention groups received combinations of plastic-free kitchenware, low-plastic personal-care products, and food sourced from more than 100 producers, minimizing all plastic touchpoints from paddock to plate.
The findings were definitely encouraging for anyone wanting to detox from plastics. Urinary levels of mono-n-butyl phthalate, monobenzyl phthalate, and bisphenol A declined by 37.5 percent, 53.5 percent, and 59.7 percent, respectively.
The groups provided with foods that had minimal to no contact with plastic demonstrated the most significant reductions in plastic body burden. Meanwhile, replacing low-plastic personal-care products alone led to an independent decrease in urinary mono-n-butyl phthalate compared with no intervention.

Reduce plastic food packaging by shopping with reusable mesh produce bags, buying in bulk, and choosing whole fruits and vegetables over pre-cut options.
Opt for products in glass, metal, or cardboard, and shop at farmers’ markets where items are rarely packaged in plastic.
To reduce plastic exposure from personal care products, switch to solid bars (shampoo, soap), prioritize metal or glass packaging, and avoid synthetic, microbead-heavy cosmetics.
Actively check ingredient lists to avoid hidden plastics (polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon, acrylates); use natural materials for tools such as toothbrushes (bamboo, wood), and choose refillable products.
Switch from plastic combs to wooden or metal alternatives, and use vegan hair brushes with bamboo handles and natural fiber bristles.
Choose “fragrance-free” products to avoid phthalates associated with plastics.

Olive is a holistic health companion built to help you live cleaner and feel better. Scan a barcode and Olive shows you exactly what is in your food, your personal care products, and the things you bring into your home, then points you to a clean swap that actually makes a difference.
Inside the app you also get:
You scan a product. Olive scores it from 0 to 100 (higher is cleaner), explains in plain language why it scored that way, flags the harmful stuff like seed oils, additives, hidden sugars, contaminants, and endocrine disruptors, and points you to a cleaner swap.
From there, Olive helps you actually change: a 28-day kitchen detox to start, habit building, coaching, and doctor-supervised peptide protocols.
What starts with one scan can end in more energy, a clear head, and a shopping cart you finally trust.
All three. Scan food and drinks for the 0 to 100 score, with a breakdown of toxins, additives, processing, seed oils, and sugar.
Scan skincare, makeup, sunscreen, shampoo, and other personal care products and Olive rates every ingredient green, yellow, or red with a plain-language reason for the rating.
Scan bottled water and Olive checks it for contaminants such as fluoride, heavy metals, and microplastics.
We do our own independent lab testing for heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic) across roughly 400 products so far. That is more testing than most companies do, including Consumer Reports.
Our cosmetic ingredient rating system was built with the head of a chemical toxin working group, so every ingredient carries a documented reason behind its rating.
And Olive is independent. No ads, no affiliates, and we do not take money to change scores. Your subscription is what funds the testing, so Olive answers to you. All of it runs on a database of 10M+ products.
